Mystery photo -- revealed, from February 5, 2006 blOg question.

Davie has a lot of beautiful scenery. This photograph was taken by the photographer (Mayor Tom Truex), looking west from the top of Vista View Park in western Davie.

Mystery photo -- Do you know where this photo was taken???

Davie has a lot of beautiful scenery. Much of the pretty country scenery in Davie is unlike anything else in the county. It would be hard to call the pictured view "country," but from the vantage point of this photographer (Mayor Tom Truex), it is nonetheless a unique sight.

... On the Shores of Wolf Lake

By the shore of Gitchie Gumee,
By the shining Big-Sea-Water,
At the doorway of his wigwam,
In the pleasant Summer morning,
Hiawatha stood and waited.
All the air was full of freshness,
All the earth was bright and joyous,
And before him through the sunshine,
Westward toward the neighboring forest
Passed in golden swarms the Ahmo,
Passed the bees, the honey-makers,
Burning, singing in the sunshine.
Bright above him shown the heavens,
Level spread the lake before him;
From its bosom leaped the sturgeon,
Sparkling, flashing in the sunshine;
On its margin the great forest
Stood reflected in the water,
Every tree-top had its shadow,
Motionless beneath the water.
From the brow of Hiawatha
Gone was every trace of sorrow,
As the fog from off the water,
And the mist from off the meadow.
With a smile of joy and triumph,
With a look of exultation,
As of one who in a vision
Sees what is to be, but is not,
Stood and waited Hiawatha.

-- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Well, perhaps the shore of Wolf Lake is not quite the shore of Gitchie Gumee. Yet, Davie definitely has some of the prettiest parks and open space anywhere in the county. Preserving and enhancing our natural environment is never easy. It is costly, and time consuming. It creates controversy and debate. Preserving the beauty of our Town is worthwhile and important. We owe it to our Town pioneers. We owe it to future generations of Davie residents.

Canals, Guardrails

Several recent tragedies have reminded us of the danger of cars leaving the roadway and ending up in a canal.

Personally, I do not think it is practical or desirable to have a guardrail along every stretch of every canal. I believe Davie will undertake a renewed effort to identify dangerous locations, and attempt to mitigate those dangers where possible.

Photo: Guardrails were installed along 70th Avenue a few years ago. At the time, one argument was safety vs. preserving a rural look. [*click* photo to enlarge]

Trivia question: Name that Street

OK, here's a Trivia question to determine if anyone from Davie is looking at this blOg; and what you know about Davie.

Question: Which street is pictured in the photo at left?

Hint: This street features old, majestic shade trees and palm trees aplenty; multi-acre residential lots; a rural feeling; quiet streets; and wood fencing.

I'll wait a few days to see if anyone can name this street. Send your answers/guesses to me at truex@davie.org

Scenic country road in Davie

If you think this is a picture of a scenic country road in western Davie, you would be half right. It IS a scenic country road -- but it is 61st Avenue, in eastern Davie. As Mayor, I have spent a lot of time trying to learn as much as I can about every section of Davie. It's a huge task. It seems as though every corner of Town has it's own character. Davie's diversity is one thing which makes our community great.

Sometimes I hear people try to generalize about east Davie or west Davie. Those stereotypes are actually the next best thing to useless. Getting to know individual neighborhoods takes time and commitment.

If you would like to show me more about your neighborhood (believe me, I would like to learn) please call me or write:

Phone 954-797-1030 (Town Hall) or email

Archive photo of the week: a rural landscape

There is a lot to be said for open space. People who have it sometimes take it for granted. People who don't have it will spend millions of dollars to get a little bit of it.

Some parts of Davie are semi-rural. All parts of Davie are at least semi-urban. We have a huge challenge in preserving the semi-rural character of Davie.

Sunday on the Bike Paths

This past Sunday afternoon was a perfect time to go bike riding in Davie. We rode out along Linear Park to Robbins Lodge. From there we crossed over the canal in back of the park, using the bike/horse bridge. Then we rode along the back side of Flamingo Gardens and up along Peaceful Ridge Road. From there we looped around to the new bike path on Hiatus Road, back to Linear Park, and back home. I don't know where you find a better set of bike paths in this area!

H2O: the South New River flows toward the ocean at the Tony Salvino Bridge

I snapped this photo of the South New River (C-11 Canal) while I was waiting in traffic.

We have two major problems with water in South Florida:

1. There is too much of it; and
2. There is not enough of it.

When it rains, flooding is a major problem. The Town of Davie has undertaken a major capital improvement effort to better drain flood prone areas of Town.

Having enough water during dry or drought conditions is a major regional issue. Davie needs to do it's part by managing growth so as not to overburden our sources of water.
