Davie Police Chief, John George, Retires After 30 Years of Service to the Town of Davie
A Letter from retiring Police Chief John George...
As of August 1, 2007, I celebrated my 30th anniversary as an employee of the Town of Davie Police Department. During my service to the Town, I have been a very proud and loyal police official, community partner and public servant. Along with many accomplishments, this 30 year anniversary was the final milestone that I have been working towards and now that I have reached it, I have given notice to the Town Administrator of my intent to retire from Town service on November 30, 2007.
As the retiring Chief of Police of the Davie Police Department, I proudly identify some of the accomplishments that we have achieved during my time at the helm. First, I have worked very hard to instill integrity in the members of our Department and thus develop public trust in our organization. When I first became Chief, I identified areas where the Department needed improvement and worked in an exhaustive manner to make the necessary changes in these areas as fast as we possibly could. I have also worked diligently to maintain the support of the residents of the community, as well as the Town political and administrative leaders.
Some of the areas in which I have worked to improve Davie Police Department include, but are not limited to, improved working conditions for all Police Department employees, improved quality and abundance of equipment, further development of technology and computerization, development of personnel through education and training, increased personnel diversity, establishment of a Crime Scene Unit, creation of a Senior Citizen Outreach program, implementation of a career pathing program, acquisition of better weaponry, use of less lethal tools, and development of a Department centered Training Unit which conducts training up through advanced levels for all employees. In the areas where I could help improve benefits for employees and solve problems outside of the collective bargaining process, I did so. I worked very hard to instill a high level of employee accountability and implementation of fair discipline practices, which have played an integral role in maintaining the community support the Department requires to be effective. I made certain, when funding allowed, that the Department employees were provided the direction and encouragement necessary for professional and personal development. During my time as Chief, we were also successful at maintaining an overall reduced crime rate, which added to the quality of life for the residents of the Town. The final achievement on my path to success as Chief of Police was the recognition the Department received when it was awarded State and National Accreditation.
In closing, I thank the residents of the Town for the many years of support and partnership. I have no doubt that the fine men and women who comprise the staff of the Davie Police Department will continue to be the best at serving and protecting the residents of the town of Davie after I leave the Town service.

Davie Elementary Hosts Eleventh Annual "Turkey Trot"
Davie Elementary School hosted it's eleventh annual "Turkey Trot" this week. This year, the Turkey Trot combined with The American Diabetes Association, to help fight obesity and educate the students on the awareness and prevention of diabetes.
The Turkey Trot launched the message that obesity and Type-II diabetes in children is now an epidemic in the United States. The number of children who are overweight has doubled in the last two-three decades. Currently, statistics show that about 20 million Americans have diabetes. Five million have Type -II diabetes, and another 41 million have pre-diabetes and do not know it. It is proven that children and adults that increase their physical activity and make healthier food choices can control and help prevent long-term diabetic complications.
Each participant (student, teacher, and parent) was asked to make a monetary donation to The American Diabetes Association and bring in one can of non-perishable food for the Ease Foundation of Davie Food Drive. For many years the Ease Foundation has been instrumental in serving our community and helping needy families during the holiday season. (Source: Davie Elementary online newsletter)

Bike Rally in Davie Another Success
Davie's most recent bike rally was another success. The bike rally series introduces residents to some of Davie's superb recreational trails. We alter the routes to highlight different bike paths throughout Town. I always look forward to seeing familiar faces and new faces with each Bike Rally. These events are safe for people of all ages--police escorts help us cross any busy roads.
