Farah's Place Grand Opening in Davie

This afternoon I attended the grand opening and ribbon cutting for "Farah's Place" in the Shenandoah Shopping Center (Southwest of I-595 and 136th Avenue). Farah's Place is a new member of the Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce. It is a family owned and operated gift shop, located at 13670 W. State Road 84, in Davie. They have an amazing selection of gifts--many from Egypt--which I don't think you'll find elsewhere.

Town Council Meets to Discuss Firefighters' Contract

There are very few exceptions to the principal of government in the Sunshine, in Florida. One such exception is for the Town Council to meet in executive session to consider Union Contract Negotiations. The Davie Town Council met in executive session this evening to discuss the Firefighters' Union Contract. Both the Town and the Union are working toward reaching a fair agreement as soon as possible.

Celebrity Photo of the Week

Yesterday Janet and I met up with my friend--and newly elected Southwest Ranches Councilmember--Steve Breitkreuz, and his wife, Denise. Steve told me a bit of his vision for a new direction for Southwest Ranches. Mr. Breitkreuz is dedicated to his community and will serve it well.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County Opens "Admirals Marine Academy" in Davie

I attended the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the The Boys and Girls Clubs, "Admirals Marine Academy."

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America was founded in 1860 in Connecticut to give local boys a positive alternative to the streets. Over the years, that Club turned into a national movement reaching a membership of over four million boys and girls, making it one of the largest youth serving agencies in the United States.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County joined the national organization in 1965 and have grown along with the movement. It now has 12 facilities with a membership of over 12,500 youth, making them one of the largest Boys and Girls Club organizations in the nation.

Davie Town Council Considers RAC Study

Last week the Davie Town Council reviewed and considered a draft proposal from the RAC Study consultants. The Regional Activity Center (RAC) includes much of the area around the Universities, roughly from the Turnpike to University, and I-595 to Griffin Road.

Although the Town Council expressed agreement with much of the plan, the proposed/potential densities--including population levels and building height was much too high, in my opinion. A copy of the draft document presented at the workshop is attached here as a PDF file (unfortunately, it's a big file--2.2 MB--at low resolution, of a photocopy that wasn't too legible to begin with...)

Davie Fire Department Presents Awards for Posters and Essays

Today I attended the awards ceremony for winners of the Fire Safety Posters and Essay Contest. Students in Davie schools submitted some excellent posters and essays--all dealing with the extremely important topic of fire safety. One of the contest judges from our Davie Fire Department remarked that the quality of the entries this year was so high that selecting the winners was a difficult task. Congratulations to all of the contest entrants for your excellent work!

Congressman Clay Shaw Holds a Big Campaign Rally at Davie's Rodeo Arena.

Recently Congressman E. Clay Shaw held a big campaign rally, with family and friend (he has lots of both) at Davie's Rodeo Arena. Congressman Shaw has always been a powerful friend to the residents of Davie. Because of his seniority in the US House of Representatives, he is in a position to make things happen in a positive way, in South Florida.
